The Ayutthaya to Bangkok bus is the return journey on one of Thailand's most popular routes. Ayutthaya was one of the most glorious cities in Asia for over 400 years — the capital of the Kingdom of Siam from 1351 to 1767. Ayutthaya sits on an island formed by three rivers — the Chao Phraya, Pa Sak and Lopburi — and at its peak in the 17th century it was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world. The city was largely destroyed by Burmese invaders in 1767, and the ruins left behind are hauntingly beautiful.
From Bangkok, Ayutthaya is easily reached in 1.5 to 2 hours by bus or train. Buses depart frequently from Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal, and minivans run from Victory Monument. The train from Hua Lamphong is a slightly slower but scenic option.
On arrival, rent a bicycle to explore the historical park at your own pace — this is the most popular way to see Ayutthaya. Alternatively, hire a tuk-tuk for a guided tour of the main sites. The most impressive ruins include Wat Mahathat (famous for the Buddha head entwined in tree roots), Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Ayutthaya Historical Park.
Ayutthaya makes an excellent day trip from Ayutthaya, but if you want a more leisurely experience, staying one night allows you to see the ruins at sunset and sunrise — when they are at their most atmospheric.
