The Bangkok to Chiang Mai bus route is the most popular long-distance bus journey in Thailand. Every evening, dozens of VIP sleeper coaches depart from Bangkok's Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal, travelling 700 kilometres north through Thailand's central plains and into the mountain highlands, arriving in Chiang Mai by early morning.
Travelling by bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is one of the best travel decisions you can make in Thailand. The overnight journey is not only significantly cheaper than flying — with tickets starting from just 350 THB — but it also saves you the cost of a hotel night. You depart in the evening, sleep on board, and wake up in northern Thailand ready to explore.
The most popular choice for this route is the VIP 32-seat coach, which features large reclining seats that go almost fully flat, individual reading lights, a blanket and sometimes a small snack. First-class buses (40 seats) are slightly cheaper but still very comfortable. Standard class is not recommended for a journey of this length.
Buses depart from Bangkok's Mo Chit (Northern Bus Terminal). The easiest way to reach Mo Chit is by BTS Skytrain to Mo Chit station, or MRT to Chatuchak Park — both are a short walk from the terminal. Taxis and Grab are also widely available.
In Chiang Mai, most long-distance buses arrive at the Arcade Bus Terminal (Terminal 2), located about 3 kilometres from the old city. From the terminal, take a red songthaew (shared pickup truck) or a Grab taxi into the city centre.
The journey takes 9 to 11 hours depending on traffic and the number of stops. Most services make one or two rest stops at roadside service areas where you can buy food and use the facilities. Arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes before your departure — 45 minutes on weekends and during Thai public holidays.
