Hat Yai is southern Thailand's largest city and the main overland gateway to Malaysia. The overnight bus from Bangkok is the budget traveller's classic route for beginning a journey down the peninsula.
Hat Yai is a vibrant, culturally diverse city in Songkhla Province with a large Thai-Chinese and Thai-Malay population. While it is primarily a transit city for travellers crossing into Malaysia, Hat Yai itself deserves a longer look — it has some of the best street food in Thailand, a lively night market and a distinctly different atmosphere from the tourist trail further north.
The overnight bus from Bangkok's Sai Tai Mai Southern Terminal takes 14 to 16 hours and arrives in Hat Yai by morning. VIP or first-class seats are recommended for this long journey.
From Hat Yai, the main onward connections are: buses and minivans to Penang, Malaysia (4–5 hours); buses to the border crossing at Padang Besar or Sadao for onward travel to Kuala Lumpur; and buses to Songkhla, the nearby coastal city with a beautiful old town.
Hat Yai is also the closest major city to Koh Lipe — the remote, stunning island near the Malaysian border. Minivans run from Hat Yai to Pak Bara pier (2.5 hours), from where speedboats connect to Koh Lipe.
