About the Bangkok to Kanchanaburi Bus Route

Kanchanaburi is one of Thailand's most historically significant destinations — home to the Bridge on the River Kwai, the Death Railway, and some of the country's most moving WWII memorials.

Route Details & Travel Information

Kanchanaburi sits at the confluence of the Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai rivers and is forever associated with one of the most harrowing stories of World War II. Between 1942 and 1943, over 100,000 Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers were forced to build the Death Railway under brutal conditions. Today the town is a place of remembrance and reflection, but also a genuinely beautiful riverside destination.

The Bridge on the River Kwai is the town's most famous landmark — the reconstructed steel bridge that was part of the Death Railway route to Burma. Walk across it (watching carefully for the twice-daily train), and visit the excellent JEATH War Museum and the Allied War Cemetery.

Beyond the historical sites, Kanchanaburi is a gateway to natural beauty. Erawan National Park, about 65 kilometres north, has seven tiers of spectacular turquoise waterfalls set in pristine jungle — arguably the most beautiful waterfall in Thailand. Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, further north, commemorates the most gruelling section of the Death Railway.

From Bangkok, frequent buses depart from Sai Tai Mai Southern Terminal and minivans from Victory Monument. The journey takes 2.5 to 3 hours.
