About the Chiang Mai to Nan Bus Route

Nan is one of northern Thailand's most underrated destinations — a beautiful provincial capital with ancient Lanna temples, remarkable Buddhist murals, and mountain scenery without the crowds.

Route Details & Travel Information

Nan Province is a revelation for travellers who have explored the main northern Thailand circuit and are looking for something less visited. The capital, Nan Town, has an excellent provincial museum, beautiful Wat Phumin with its famous 'whispering lovers' mural, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels completely unchanged from decades past.

The journey from Chiang Mai to Nan passes through some of northern Thailand's most beautiful mountain scenery — forested ridges, river valleys and small hilltribe villages. The road winds through mountains for much of the route.

Beyond Nan Town, the province offers excellent cycling, trekking, and boat trips on the Nan River. The remote Doi Phu Kha National Park has accommodation and trails through cloud forest. Nan is also known for its excellent local cuisine and the Bo Kluea salt wells — an ancient inland sea salt mining operation still in use today.
