The Chiang Mai to Phuket route is one of the most ambitious overland journeys in Thailand. At 1,450 kilometres, it covers almost the entire length of the country — from the cool mountain city of Chiang Mai in the north to the tropical beaches of Phuket in the south.
Most experienced travellers choose to break this journey into two overnight legs: Chiang Mai to Bangkok (9–11 hours), followed by an overnight stop in Bangkok, then Bangkok to Phuket (12–14 hours). This approach is significantly more comfortable and allows you to rest properly between journeys.
Direct services from Chiang Mai to Phuket do exist, but the total travel time of 18–20 hours is very demanding. If you choose the direct route, a VIP sleeper seat is essential.
An alternative approach is to combine transport modes: take the overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok (more comfortable for sleeping), then a VIP bus from Bangkok to Phuket. Or fly one leg and bus the other — many travellers fly Chiang Mai to Bangkok, then take the overnight bus to Phuket.
