The Golden Triangle — the point where three countries meet at the Mekong River — carries enormous historical weight. For decades during the 20th century, this remote mountain borderland produced the majority of the world's opium and heroin. Today it is a peaceful tourist destination, but the history is preserved and presented with remarkable clarity at the House of Opium museum.
The village of Sop Ruak sits at the exact point where the Ruak River meets the Mekong, marking the Thai-Myanmar-Laos tri-border. From the viewpoint, you can see all three countries simultaneously — Myanmar's mountains rising directly across the Ruak, Laos visible as a forested strip across the Mekong.
The House of Opium museum is outstanding — a beautifully curated and unsparing account of the opium trade, its history in this region, and its devastating human consequences. The adjacent Golden Triangle Park has a large golden Buddha and Mekong riverside walks.
Long-tail boats from the pier at Sop Ruak make short crossings to Don Sao island (Laos), where a small duty-free market operates. Thai visitors can enter for the day without a visa; western passport holders typically need a Laos visa.
From Chiang Rai, local buses run to Chiang Saen (the nearest town, 8 km south of Sop Ruak), from where songthaews continue to the Golden Triangle. Minivans offer a more direct service.
