About the Sukhothai to Bangkok Bus Route

The Sukhothai to Bangkok bus is the return journey on one of Thailand's most popular routes. Sukhothai was the first capital of the Kingdom of Thailand, founded in the 13th century, and its historical park contains some of the most beautiful and atmospheric ancient ruins in Southeast Asia.

Route Details & Travel Information

Sukhothai — meaning 'Dawn of Happiness' in Thai — was established as the first independent Thai kingdom in 1238 and served as the capital until 1438. During this period, Thai art, architecture, language and culture took the forms that still define Thai identity today.

The Sukhothai Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site spread across 70 square kilometres. The core zone contains the most important ruins — Wat Mahathat (the royal temple at the heart of the ancient city, surrounded by a moat and lotus-filled ponds), Wat Sa Si (a graceful chedi on an island in the middle of a lake), and Wat Trapang Ngoen.

The best way to explore the park is by bicycle — it is flat, the distances between temples are manageable, and cycling among the ancient ruins on a quiet morning is one of the most memorable experiences in Thailand. Bicycles can be rented at the park entrance for around 50 THB per day.

Beyond the core zone, Wat Sri Chum is a must-see — an enormous mondop housing one of Thailand's largest Buddha images, peering through a narrow opening in the thick walls. Wat Saphan Hin sits on a hilltop 2 kilometres west of the old city and requires a short climb, rewarded by panoramic views.

The Historical Park is 12 kilometres from Sukhothai New Town, where buses arrive. Red songthaews connect the two.
